The Computer Science Department is supported by four closely co-operating Institutions: The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, the German Research Centre for Arti-ficial Intelligence (Deutsches Forschungszentrum für künstliche Intelligenz), the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science and the Max Planck Institute for Software Sys-tems. Among the prominent research fields in Saabrücken are: Algorithms and data structures, computer graphics, database systems, artificial intelligence, logical methods, programming languages, computer architecture as well as security.

Programme schedule

The Master programme in Computer Science consists of four semesters and follows our "Bachelor of Science" (undergraduate) course of study (six semesters). Offered courses belong to the following categories: basic lectures in theoretical and practical computer science, in-depth lectures, specialized lectures and seminars. A masters thesis is obligatory. Master students have to gain a certain number of credits in the mentioned categories, but are free to choose their own specialisation in computer science.

 

A sample Master schedule designed for four semesters is built up as follows (L = lecture, T = tutorial, S = seminar, PT = practical training; the number stated after the abbreviations indicates the number of semester periods per week (Semesterwochenstunden; SWS):

 

1st semester:

  • Core or advanced lecture, 9 credits ( L4 E2)
  • Core or advanced lecture, 9 credits ( L4 E2)
  • Seminar, 7 credits (S2)
  • Tutor practice, 4 credits, (E2)

 

2nd semester:

  • Core or advanced lecture, 9 credits ( L4 E2)
  • Core or advanced lecture, 9 credits ( L4 E2)
  • Advanced lecture, 6 credits (L2 E2)
  • Advanced lecture, 6 credits (L2 E2)

 

3rd semester:

  • Master seminar, 12 credits, (S1 PT3)
  • Seminar, 7 credits (S2)
  • Advanced lecture, 6 credits (L2 E2)   
  • Advanced lecture, 6 credits (L2 E2)

 

4th Semester

  • Final project (Master thesis), 30 credits

 

At the end of the semester each course ends with a written or oral exam. The overall grade of the degree consists of these grades weighted according to the earned credits in each course.

Admission / Application

The requirements for the Computer Science Master programme in Saarbrücken are:

 

  • B.Sc. degree. Your degree has to be equivalent to a Bachelor Degree in Computer Science of Saarland University
  • a good command of written and spoken English
  • To be successful in our master course of study, you’ll need the ability to abstract, mathematical and theoretical as well as practical skills.
