The principle focus of the research programme of the Chair in Analytical Chemistry is on bioanalytical chemistry, separation techniques, mass spectrometry and technology development, undertaking innovative research to develop and apply state-of-the-art non-invasive analytical tools for measuring important indicators or "biomarkers" of physiological status, health, disease or nutritional intake.

The main research areas are:

• Metabolomics, lipidomics and biomarker-Discovery: application to metabolic pathways and disease biomarkers, novel chemical labelling techniques for global profiling of metabolites, biomarker discovery in inconventional, non-invasive sample matrices
• Isoprenoid homeostasis and mechanisms of protein prenylation
• Quantitative laser desorption mass spectrometry and technology development
• Structural elucidation techniques, gas phase ion chemistry and quantitative mass spectrometry
