Language Science and Technology

Saarland University Saarbrücken (Germany) offers a new international Masters program in Language Science and Technology, leading to the degree Master of Science (M.Sc.) in 24 months. Saarbrücken is one of the world's leading centers for language science and technology with faculty and students coming from many countries. An active program of basic, applied and cognitive research combines with state-of-the-art facilities to provide students with a rich and stimulating environment for their research.
For many students and practitioners of Computational Linguistics, the special attraction of the discipline is the combination of expertise from the humanities, the natural and be-havioural sciences, and engineering. The practical orientation of the work is an important aspect of this appeal. The course of studies can be personalized by setting an individual research focus. In ad-dition to the general degree Master of Science in Language Science and Technology, stu-dents have the option of specializing in the following areas:

  • Computational Linguistics
  • Computational Psycholinguistics
  • Language Technology
  • Phonetics and Speech Technology

Admission / Application

Applicants must hold the German “Abitur”, “Fachabitur” or an equivalent foreign high school graduation certificate attesting to the qualification for higher education.
Additionally, applicants must have a Bachelor degree or equivalent in (Computational) Linguistics, Language Technology, Cognitive Sciences, Computer Science or other rele-vant disciplines.

 

Proficiency in English (for non-native speakers) must be certified by one of the following:

  • TOEFL score of at least 213 (computer-based test) or 550 (paper-based test).
    TOEFL code number 8497
    for Saarland University-Dept. Computational Linguistics and Phonetics.
    Important: Enter the code on your answer sheets when you sit for the examination.
  • Cambridge Proficiency Exam – pass.
  • Cambridge CAE Advanced – grade of A or B.
  • IELTS
  • For Germans: Certification of at least 5 years of English at school with an average mark of at least 3.5 in the German marking system from the two final years will also fill the language requirement.

 

Knowledge of German is helpful but certification is not needed.
