Main subject:

Latin philology is concerned with the Latin language and with the literature of the Romans from the time of the earliest settlements through to late antiquity. Students also study in suitable detail the critical appropriation of Greek literature into Latin and the legacy of Latin within the European literature of post-antiquity.

Students acquire knowledge and expertise in areas of linguistics (e.g. morphology, syntax, grammar) as well as in the field of literature (genre, theories of literature in antiquity, prosody, language styles, study of sources, etc.).  

Graduates are qualified for all careers that are more or less closely concerned with the written word, such as journalism, editorial work, dramaturgy, librarianship).  By requiring students to reflect intensively on language while studying Latin grammar and by encouraging them to use this knowledge to develop philological interpretations of literary texts, the programme also ensures that students receive a schooling in logic.
