The Bachelor’s programme in phonetics and phonology teaches students about the articulation and acoustic structures found in individual languages and in human language as a whole. Students receive a grounding in the subject in which they are taught about the quantitative and qualitative analysis and description of spoken language from both the physical and communicative perspectives. This gives students a deeper appreciation of verbal communication processes in their native language and a heightened awareness and understanding of the perceptual and motor-learning problems associated with the pronunciation of foreign languages. At Saarland University, particular emphasis is placed on training analytical listening skills and on illuminating the relationship between what is heard and what has been physically measured. Further special features of the phonetics programme taught at Saarbrücken include work on the prosodic elements of language and the study of speech and language pathologies.
