Psychology (Bachelor)
Psychology is an empirical science based on observation and experimental verification whose goal is to study and understand human behaviour and mental life. Students of psychology therefore need to acquire a broad understanding of the cognitive and biological fundamentals underlying human experience and behaviour in such areas as perception, awareness, learning, memory, emotion and motivation. They also need to know how individuals can be distinguished in terms of personality, temperament and intelligence, and how mental functions and faculties develop over the human life-span. Students of psychology also need to address the practical applications of psychology, such as clinical psychology, clinical neuropsychology, organisational psychology, educational psychology and applied cognitive psychology.
The B.Sc. programme in psychology at Saarland University provides students with an ideal environment to acquire the requisite knowledge and skills. The Bachelor’s degree represents the first part of the consecutive B.Sc./M.Sc. programme offered at Saarland University. Graduates from the B.Sc. programme can also join other Master’s programmes in related academic fields or can apply for entry-level career positions as a graduate psychologist.
The Bachelor’s degree programme in psychology also provides students with cores skills needed in the labour market. By participating actively in academic courses, such as lectures, seminars, tutorials, problem-solving classes and practical training and lab work, by undertaking extended supervised work placements and by compiling a final-year thesis based on a supervised student research project, students on the B.Sc. programme acquire the knowledge and skills to identify problems in psychology, formulate and justify possible solutions and implement these solutions in an appropriate manner.
