Weltoffen und familiär zugleich – die Uni, die Stadt, das Land

First-class conditions

Students at Saarland University will enjoy the benefits of small learning groups, spacious lab facilities, excellent supervision and personal contact to academic staff. Saarland University is a diverse and international academic community where students have excellent opportunities to spend part of their degree course studying at one of our many respected partner universities abroad. As a campus university, the departments, institutes, laboratories and libraries are all close at hand – and the familiarity of the campus environment is often mentioned as one of the benefits of studying at Saarland University. But that's not all…

Outdoor recreation and cultural activities on and around campus

University sport, choirs and orchestras, theatre groups, a cinema, lots of cafés and even more parties – life on campus at Saarland University is never dull. "Joie de vivre" in Saarland's capital city

Students in Saarbrücken are offered a rich and varied programme of cultural and recreational activities while benefitting from living costs that are lower than in many other university cities in Germany. Museums, cinemas, theatres, opera, clubs and street festivals, Saarbrücken offers any number of opportunities to meet up with friends or to get to know new people. "Der Staden" is the name of the park that runs along the banks of the River Saar – and is a great place to chill out and relax, especially in the summer. Barbecuing (or "schwenken" as it is known in Saarland) is also popular in the city's many beer gardens or at the designated BBQ areas in the surrounding woodlands. Saarbrücken's close proximity to France is very noticeable at Sankt Johanner Markt with its cafés and colourful market stalls. And it's sunny, too! Saarland is one of the warmest regions in Germany with some of the longest sunshine hours and mildest temperatures throughout the year. But that's not all…

Good neighbourly relations in Europe's Saar-Lor-Lux region

Saarland is not one of Germany's bigger federal states (Länder) and so nothing is ever far away – a fact that is especially true of our European neighbours. France is right outside the door, and you can reach Paris from Saarbrücken in just under two hours. France's Lorraine region is only a few minutes away by car, bus or train and the Alsace is also not far away. And Luxembourg (or the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to give it its full title), which is only about 80 km (50 miles) from Saarbrücken, is always worth visiting for an extended shopping or sightseeing trip. Whether you fancy having breakfast in Sarreguemines, want to go shopping in Metz, to trace history in Verdun or simply to experience the cafés of Place Stanislas in Nancy − all these and other destinations in the region are easy to reach from Saarbrücken.
