The *Start Smart* initiative
Dear International Students,
The Guidance Centre for International Students (ZiS), which is part of Saarland University’s International Office, has extended its range of services to include the new *Start Smart* initiative that provides initial orientation to students when they begin their chosen course of study.
Students studying in a foreign country need sound advice particularly at the beginning of their studies, because getting a good start is the best possible foundation for a profitable and enjoyable time at university.
You might, for example, want to know who the contact is for international students at your department, or what help your departmental student organization (Fachschaft) can offer.
Are there any orientation events at the start of the semester and where do you find the departmental notice board?
How do you plan the first stages of your degree course? How do you compile a weekly timetable?
More or less all newly enrolled students need answers to these and other questions, but effective initial orientation is particularly important for international students
The *Start Smart* initiative can save you time by telling you straightaway who your programme or departmental advisor is, or where you need to go on campus to get a particular job done. The information box on the right provides answers to some frequently asked questions, gives you access to firsthand reports and views from other international students and includes a questionnaire so that you can provide feedback on your specific situation.
