The ZiS buddy programme *you & me*

Dear students,
Perhaps you have spent time studying abroad at a foreign university and you know what it’s like to feel alone and unsure of your surroundings. Even the smallest things can turn into a problem. You have to open a bank account, and enrol at the university, and you’d like to learn more about the town and region you’ve come to. But all too often there’s no one there to turn to. And though your language skills are still quite modest, there are all those complicated official forms that have to be filled in…

During the winter semester of 2012/13 there were a total of 3047 international students from 110 countries studying at Saarland University (including foreign students with a German higher-education entrance qualification) – making up 16,42 % of the student population.

Starting to study in another country can place high demands on a student’s language, organizational and intercultural skills. To help new international students adjust to their new environment, the Guidance Centre for International Students (ZiS) runs a buddy programme called *you and me*. The *you & me* programme is a peer mentoring scheme that aims to match up an incoming international student with a German student volunteer who will help the international student to adjust to life at Saarland University – making day-to-day life on campus and leisure time more interesting and enjoyable for both.

Buddies can take part in the monthly *you & me* get-together (StammTisch) or they can come to one of our social events or sign up for an excursion or outing.

Interested? Then come in for a chat (Room 2.37 / 2.39) or simply send an e-mail to: PatenschaftenSB(at)io.uni-saarland.de
