Practicals of the Competence Center Molecular Medicine

With support by the "Fonds der Chemischen Industrie", the KoMM offers further education courses for teachers as well as practical courses for pupils.

  • Further education course for teachers
The course on molecular medicine is split into two parts. The first theoretical part introduces participants to the matters and problems in experimental medicine and to the methods of molecular biology, cell biology and genomics. During the second and practical part attendees may carry out some of the following experiments:

    - DNA extraction from plant or animal cells
    - Plasmid isolation from bacteria
    - DNA digestion with restriction enzymes
    - PCR
    - Gel electrophoresis (DNA, proteins)

Duration of the course is about 3 hours. It is also suitable for trainee teacher.

  • Pupil practical on molecular biology
For pupils occupying subjects on Natural Sciences in schools from the Saarland including the sixth form we offer a special practical course on molecular biology at the University Hospital in Homburg. Pupils may perform some of the following experiments:

    - DNA extraction from plant or animal cells
    - Plasmid isolation from bacteria
    - DNA digestion with restriction enzymes
    - PCR
    - Gel electrophoresis (DNA, proteins)

Former participation of the responsible teacher in our further education course for teachers is desired. As soon as the date and subject for a course are matched, a script regarding the required theoretical background will be made available. Duration of the course is about 1 or 4 hours.

    Descriptions:

    1. Plasmid isolation from bacteria (ca. 4-5 hours)
    2. Drug Discovery (January/February 2009; ca. 4-5 hours for each experiment)
    4. Prostate cancer (ca. 4 hours)
    5. Parentage diagnostics (ca. 4 hours))
    6. DNA isolation out of fruits (ca. 1 hour)
    7. DNA digestion with restriction enzymes (ca. 2 hours)
    8. PCR (ca. 3 hours)
