In order to complement the audio-visual and audio-lingual teaching methods, students are free to use two language laboratories and a wide selection of tapes for further language practice, e.g. exercises in grammar, phonetics, listening comprehension or interpreting (Library System). Interpreters are able to use special facilities consisting of 5 interpreting booths, each accommodating two persons. In addition, a video-room with the opportunity to record programmes from a variety of countries and a library are at the students' disposal.
Since the beginning of 1999, courses, especially in LSP translation and terminology management as well as computer-aided translation can be held in the department's own computer laboratory, which also can be used by the students for sending e-mails, surfing in the internet and preparing their translation classes. The computer laboratory consists of two rooms: a large one with 20 computers for the students and one computer for the teacher and a smaller one with five computers for small working groups or tutorials. The computers running under Windows NT form a local area network administered by a Windows NT Server and are connected to the university network. Besides standard software packages like Office 97, internet browser, DTP and graphics applications the computer laboratory offers translation tools, like Translator's Workbench, Transit, Translation Manager, terminology management systems like Multiterm and TermStar as well as PC-based machine translation systems like T1, Personal Translator and Systran PC.
