Saarbrücken Studies on Linguistic Data Processing and Translating
The series "Saarbrücker Studien zu Sprachdatenverarbeitung und Übersetzen" (Saarbrücken Studies on Linguistic Data Processing and Translating) is published, in order to make available for those interested in the field of Linguistic Data Processing and Translating some selected diploma theses as well as other reports or papers dealing with machine(-aided) translation and related subjects.
Since September 1995, the following volumes have been published:
- Vol. 1:
Thilo Schüller. Integrierte Übersetzungssysteme.1994. Translation Memory components of integrated translation systems are compared on the basis of various translation scenarios. A model for evaluating the performance of such systems is developed. The report deals with the systems TranslationManager/2 (IBM), Translator's Workbench II (Trados), and MemCat (Keck,IBM).

Michael Seybold. Terminologieverwaltung unter Windows. Eine vergleichende Untersuchung.1995.
Detailed description and analysis of the terminology management systems TermStar (Star), Multiterm 95 (Trados), TermISys (Koeller Informationssysteme), and Termbase for Windows (Srinivasan).

Detailed description and analysis of the integrated machine-aided translation systems Translator's Workbench for Windows (Trados), TranslationManager for Windows (IBM), and Transit for Windows WINDOWS (Star).
- Vol. 4:
Daniel Brockmann. Was kann LOGOS? Linguistische Bewertung eines kommerziellen MÜ-Systems unter Berücksichtigung weiterer markt- und forschungsorientierter Systeme. Untersuchte Sprachrichtung: Deutsch-Englisch.1993.
Short survey on the history of machine translation since 1945 and on the MT systems METAL, SYSTRAN, SUSY, and EUROTRA. The main part of this thesis concentrates on an analysis of the linguistic performance of the machine translation system LOGOS.
- Vol. 5:
Corinna Hoggenmüller. Terminologiearbeit im Nordischen Raum.1993.
Describes the history and present state of terminology work in Northern European countries; contains a detailed presentation of the TERMDOK data base.
- Vol. 6:
Stefanie Schlutter. Sprachliche Gestaltung und Internationalisierung von Benutzungsoberflächen. Erläutert an Beispielen aus dem Englischen, Deutschen und Italienischen.1995.
Analyses the linguistic aspects of user interface design and internationalisation.
- Vol. 7:
Bettina Brungs. Translation Memories als Komponente integrierter Übersetzungssysteme. Eine Untersuchung anhand verschiedener Texttypen.1995.
Deals with the question, in how far the efficiency of Tranlation Memories depends on texttype-specific aspects and tries to find out whether the performance of Translation Memories can be enhanced by improving the source texts.
- Vol. 8:
Christoph Rösener, Jens Wargenau. Terminologie- und Satzerkennung für Englisch und Russisch am Beispiel der Translator's Workbench von Trados. 1996.
The volume contains two theses analyzing the performance of the "fuzzy" algorithms used in translation memory software, such as Trados Translator's Workbench, for the recognition of terminology and "similar" sentences. The studies try to find out whether the performance of the algorithm varies for structurally different languages like English and Russian.
- Vol. 9:
Karin Marmann. Untersuchung von integrierten Werkzeugen am Übersetzerarbeitsplatz am Beispiel von Volkswagen. 1996.
Describes and analyses the workflow and the tools for the production of multilingual user and service manuals at Volkswagen AG. The study was carried out during an internship at Volkswagen AG in Wolfsburg.
- Vol. 10:
Detlef Willaschek. Untersuchung zur Verständlichkeit von AECMA Simplified English. 1996.
After an overview of the development of controlled languages and a description of AECMA Simpliefied English, the author presents the results of his own investigations on the influence of AECMA Simplified English on the understandability of maintenance manuals. The study was carried out at Lufthansa Technical Training GmbH in Hamburg.
- Vol. 11:
Sabine Pfeiffer. Untersuchung der PC-basierten Übersetzung am Beispiel des T1 von Langenscheidt und Personal Translator Plus. 1997
This thesis presents the results of testing the PC-based machine translation systems T1 (Langenscheidt) and Personal Translator Plus (Klett). The author investigates the performance for a selection of linguistic phenomena as well as the difficulties occurring during the translation of a complete text (i.e. an operating instruction).
- Vol. 12:
Anja Twents. Terminologieerkennung in integrierten Übersetzungssystemen am Beispiel des Französischen. 1997.
This thesis deals with the problems of automatic recognition of French terminology in integrated machine-aided translation systems. The author compairs the relevant components of Translator's Workbench, Transit und IBM Translation Manager.

Tests of the MARTIF format for the interchange of terminological data between MULTITERM and TERMSTAR.

Analysis of WinAlign (TRADOS), Alignment tool of Transit (STAR) and Visual Alignment Tool of TranslationManager (IBM).
Volumes 1 - 12 and 14 - 15 are available in German language, volume 13 in English. The price is DEM 35,- for each volume.
