Although today the computer plays a certain role in most of the degree
courses for translators and interpreters, there seem to be great differences
as to contents and amount of teaching as well as very little coordination
among the different institutes. Quite a long time ago, in 1989, we organized
a first workshop within the framework of our research project on the development
of an LDP curriculum for translators and interpreters. Since then several
colleagues have asked us to repeat this event. Meanwhile, we have become
involved in the EC-funded LETRAC
project (Language Engineering for Translators Curricula). We thought that
this situation provided a good opportunity to invite all those immediately
involved in the teaching of LDP courses as well as those using LDP technologies
in translation and interpreting classes to participate in a workshop on
"Linguistic Data Processing in the Training of Translators and Interpreters".
The workshop took place in the "Department
of Applied Linguistics, Translation and Interpreting" at the University
of the Saarland on December 2-3, 1998. The discussions and presentations
treated topics like:
-
overview of the activities at various institutes
-
relevance of individual LDP topics
-
didactic matters and teaching experiences
-
integration of LDP techniques into translation classes
-
harmonizing LDP curricula for translators and interpreters
We would like to thank all
those who followed our invitation and contributed to the workshop by
giving a presentation and taking part in the discussions.
If you would like to have a closer look at the results, you can link
to the "Programme"
page. From there you will get to the individual presentations.
