Abstract:
In this paper we present a course on the use of a machine
assisted translation system to translate LSP texts, which has been offered
in the context of a post-graduate porgram at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra.
The students to which the course was addressed were already trained in
LSP translation (all of them were former students of the FTI, UPF) and
consequently had already a minimum knowledge of computing means applied
to translation and also had some real experience (professional) in translation.
The course was divided in two parts of 20 hours each (5
sessions of 4 hours each), and were devoted to the trasnlation of legal
texts and of economy texts respectively.
The course used a machine assisted translation system
(Translator’s Workbench of Trados). In view of the didactic progress,
the specific functionalities of the system were grouped as basic and advanced
elements, which are taught in the first and second courses respectively.
The first course developed as follows:
-
Introduction to machine assisted translation
-
Introduction to Translator’s Workbench
-
Introduction to EU law (contracts, regulations, directives,
decisions, recommendations)
-
Translation of texts:
-
Contract model between the Commission of the European Union
and a Member State
(EN => ES)
-
Directive of the European Union Council (transportation)

(ES => CA)
-
to translate from scratch a text (the translation memory
is created
-
to translate (TWB) a couple of similar texts (the translation
memory is used)
-
2nd translated text: (ES => CA)
-
to analyse the terminology of the textto translate from scratch
the text
-
the terminology that has been listed and the previous translation
memory are used
-
to automatically translate and substitute the terminology
(TWB) in a similar text
-
to translate (TWB) the whole text (the translation memory
and the terminology listing are used, the results of automatic translation
are modified)
-
3rd text: annual report of an enterprise (EN => ES)
-
to analyse the terminology of the text
-
to automatically analyse the degree of similarity between
two texts
-
to automatically translate and substitute the terminology
(TWB)
-
to export the translation memory and to modify it. To import
it back.
And finally the evaluation of the courses is presented.
