Integrated Franco-German Master's programme in Comparative Public or Private Law and European Law (LL.M.)

Students on these two-year Master's programmes spend a year at Saarland University and a year studying at one of the following French partner universities: Panthéon-Assas (Paris 2), Grenoble Alpes, Lumière Lyon 2 or Université de Lorraine.

These programmes enable students to gain an excellent understanding of both the German and French legal systems and to select an area of specialist interest such as civil law, public law or economic law.

Each two-year integrated Master's programme is offered in two versions depending on the country in which the students wish to pursue their careers.

Version A

Version A is designed for French-speaking students who are primarily interested in obtaining a French professional qualification but who have a basic command of the German language (CEFR level B2) and want to acquire a deeper understanding of German law or European law. Students can select one of the following Master of Laws programmes at Saarland University:

  • LL.M. 'German Law and European Comparative Jurisprudence' at the Faculty of Law, Saarland University. In this case, you can choose to specialize in German public law or German private law. This LL.M. is offered by the Institute for European Law.
  • LL.M. 'European and International Law' at Saarland University's Europa-Institut. This programme is taught in English (with some optional courses in German). (Note: Tuition fees are lower for students on the integrated Franco-German Master's programme.) Students on this LL.M. programme can select modules in the areas of European and international public and private law.

Version B

Version B is designed for students of law at Saarland University who have very high proficiency in German (CEFR level C1), a basic command of French (CEFR level B2) and whose primary objective is to obtain a German professional qualification. In this case, students enrol in the LL.M. Programme 'European and International Law' at Saarland University's Europa-Institut. This programme is taught in English (with some optional courses in German). (Note: Tuition fees are lower for students on the integrated Franco-German Master's programme.)

Master 2 programmes

Irrespective of which version (A or B) has been selected, all students spend their second year enrolled in one of the 'Master 2' programmes offered by the French partner universities as part of the integrated programme. Further information on the available Master's degree programmes can be found on the CJFA website. Students who successfully complete the two-year integrated programme will be awarded an LL.M. degree from Saarland University and a 'Master 2' qualification from the French partner university.

How to apply

Depending on which LL.M. programme you choose, please send your application either to the Centre Juridique Franco-Allemand (CJFA) and/or to the Institute of European Law or the Europa-Institut. Students seeking admission to a French Master's programme must demonstrate an excellent command of French (at least CEFR level C1) irrespective of the chosen LL.M.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that they comply with the application procedures for the Master 2 degree they wish to study in the second year of the integrated Master's programme.
