Proof of German language proficiency

To study at Saarland University, international students must prove that they have acquired the necessary German language skills by presenting:

  1. a certificate that entitles the holder to pursue higher education studies in the issuing country, provided that the certificate is in German and was obtained at a German-speaking school (Generally, this is the so called German Abitur)
  2. a statement of comparability from the relevant competent authority attesting that the foreign higher education entrance qualification is equivalent to the German higher education entrance qualification, in so far as the statement of comparability covers the German language skills of the certificate holder
  3. diploma that the applicant has passed either the DSH or the PNDS German language proficiency examinations (DSH-2 or DSH-3: Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber; PNDS: Prüfung zum Nachweis deutscher Sprachkenntnisse) in accordance with guidelines laid down by the German Rectors' Conference HRK
  4. diploma that the foreign applicant has successfully completed the higher education assessment test (Feststellungsprüfung at a German Studienkolleg) to start studies at higher education institutes in Germany
  5. Goethe-Zertifikat C2: Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom (GDS) or one of the previous certificates Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung (ZOP), Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom (KDS), Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom (GDS) of a Goethe Institute
  6. diploma that the applicant has successfully completed the DSD Level II exam fixed by the KMK (DSD: Deutsches Sprachdiplom; KMK: Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs)
  7. a higher education entrance qualification obtained in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
  8. diploma that the applicant has successfully completed the 'TestDaF' exam achieving either level 4 or 5 in all four sections of the test
  9. diploma telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule

You do not need to proof proficiency in German if you are:

  • on an exchange programme
  • spending a study-abroad semester at Saarland University
