Strategic Assembly

From Wednesday, 4th October to Friday, 6th October 2023, Saarland University hosted the annual Transform4Europe Strategic Assembly at the University Campus in Saarbrücken. The event constituted a platform for exchange and discussion among all groups involved in the Transform4Europe University Alliance – students, academic and non-academic staff, the university managements and external stakeholders. Meetings of the institutional bodies of the Alliance and of different expert groups afforded the opportunity to discuss strategic questions, develop new ideas and enhance our network.

“Shared values for a shared future”: This was the focus of a policy conference on Wednesday, 4th October. European experts from various fields discussed the topics of European Identity in a Panel Discussion and in different workshops.

Important Information for the participants

Workshops

Universities play an important role in shaping the future of Europe. As actors of change, they will help face the challenges of profound transformation processes like digital transformation, aging societies and climate change. The European University Alliances, by pioneering new models of deep institutional cooperation, are driving transformation processes in their institutions as well as in their individual members and surrounding regions.

In four parallel workshops, we will discuss challenges and best practices of:

  3. Green Projects
  4. Service Learning

Meet your colleagues activities

We want to make sure you can best use the assembly to get in contact with your colleagues. On Tuesday, 18th October, an easily accessible room will be at your disposition to meet colleagues from partner universities – either spontaneously or on appointment. For the latter, please let us know beforehand with whom you wish to get in contact, so that we can help you organise a meeting.

Sightseeing and Cultural Activities

  • UNESCO World Heritage site "Völklinger Hütte" is a must see for everyone visiting the Greater Region!
    Insider tip: the World Heritage site hosts top-class exhibitions (e.g. Banksy) and concerts, so if you don't want to see the whole ironworks, check the exhibition and concert calendar!
  • Interested in Opera, Theatre and more? Have a look what's on in October at Saarländisches Staatstheater.
    The German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the best orchestras in Germany and plays in Kaiserslautern and Saarbrücken, have a look at next Season's program.
  • For those who like museums, the most popular ones are the "Historisches Museum Saar" (History of Saarland), the "Moderne Galerie" (Modern Art) or the "Stadtgalerie" (various Art Exhibitions).
    Some other famous sightseeing spots are the "Saarschleife", a hike up to the top of "Schwarzenbergturm" (Black Mountain Tower) or une promenade in the German-French Garden.
  • If you want to cross the border to have a real-life French Experience, you can do so by taking the tram either to Sarreguemines (France), a pittoresque town, or getting off the same tram already in Kleinblittersdorf and crossing the "Friendship Bridge" to the village of Grosbliederstroff (France) and enjoying a coffee and cake at "Côté Canal".
  • You're more one of the relaxing type? Try out the "Saarlandtherme", a thermal spring at the German-French border in the style of the Moors or the Sauna Area of "Calypso".

Travel and accommodation in Saarbrücken

Saarbrücken is the capital and largest city of the state of Saarland, Germany, next to the French border.

How to get to Saarbrücken

If you prefer green mobility, you can reach Saarbrücken Main Station (Saarbrücken Hbf) from your destination. From there you can walk and/or take public transport to the hotels below. There is also a taxi rank outside the station. There are two airports that usually have the best connections for international flights: Frankfurt Airport and Luxembourg Airport. Saarbrücken has a small airport and flights and destinations are very limited. If you are flying to and/or from Frankfurt Airport, the easiest way to get to Saarbrücken is to take the train. There are two stations at the airport itself: one for regional trains and one for high-speed trains. Both stations have trains to Saarbrücken depending on the time of day. To find out which train you can take, you can check on the website of the German railway network: Deutsche Bahn

If you land in Luxembourg, you will need to take a bus from the airport to the Luxembourg train station (remember that public transport within Luxembourg city is for free). From the train station you can take the CFL-Express Bus to Saarbrücken. Buses run regularly, you can check the frequency in the timetable. Bus tickets to Saarbrücken can be bought directly on the bus.

Public transport from Luxemburg Airport to Saarbrucken Main Station

The website of the Airport is this: https://www.lux-airport.lu/ Public transport in all of Luxemburg is free.

  • Getting to Saarbrücken by bus

There is a frequent bus shuttle that commutes between Saarbrücken main train station and the train station in Luxembourg (“Luxembourg Gare”). Please take the bus from the airport to the train station in Luxembourg. There is one good bus connection which run several times per hour.: Bus Line 29

Once you have arrived at the train station in Luxembourg (“Luxembourg Gare”), you can take the shuttle bus to Saarbrücken train station: https://www.emile-weber.lu/fr/ligne-bus-saarbruecken-express.html

The cost for the ticket is 5€ and the transfer takes about 1hr 15 min. Tickets are bought directly on the bus or online.

  • Public Transport in Saarbrücken

If you buy a “Germany ticket” (Deutschlandticket) for 49€ per month per Person, you can use all public transport (excluding ICE, IC, and EC). This “ticket” is a subscription. Therefore, you have to cancel your subscription before the 10. of the previous month; e.g. if you want your ticket just for September you have to cancel the ticket before 10.09. Otherwise, you have to pay another 49€ for October.

For shorter stays, we recommend a “week ticket” (Wochenkarte for 22,50€. This allows you to use trains and buses in Saarbrücken (and the entire Saarland region) for one week. Make sure your Week ticket is for “zone” (Wabe) 111

For even shorter stays we recommend “day tickets” (Tageskarte) for 5,20€ a day in Saar-brücken or 9,40€ a day for the entire Saarland. Feel free to mix and match these tickets to suit your preferences.

For detailed Travel Itineraries, download the mobile app “Saarfahrplan”. Here you can enter your starting point and where you want to go. The app shows you all alternatives (which bus stop, which bus number, and so on):

Travel between “Main station” (Hauptbahnhof) and the University:

  • Bus 124 leaves every 15-30 minutes and takes 15 minutes to arrive at the univer-sity/main station.

If you want to travel between the “Main station” (Hauptbahnhof) and the city centre:

  • You can walk as the main station is really central
  • You can use each tram on track S to the tram stop “Johanneskirche” (there’s the city hall)
  • Every 3-10 minutes there is a tram

If you want to travel from the University to the City centre:

  • You can use the following buses to Johannes Kirche or Rabbiner-Rülf-Platz: 101, 102, 109, 124

If you want to travel from the City centre to the University:

  • You can use the following busses from town hall (Rathaus): 102, 109, 101,102, 150

Where to stay

These hotels are located in the city centre, within walking distance of the train station and very well connected by bus to the university. In some hotels we have a special university rate which you can book using the code indicated below.
