About us

The Department of Business Informatics (IWi) at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI GmbH) employs over 50 research and student assistants for application-related research projects under the scientific direction of Professor Dr. Peter Loos. Research and education comprise information management and process management in manufacturing and trade, service and administration. The interdisciplinary skills of their employees also support the exchange and interaction of special knowledge with other departments. As a field of research of the DFKI, the IWi belongs to one of the globally leading research centers for computer science. They apply their knowledge in artificial intelligence to operational issues.  Likewise, the IWi performs a function as a chair in Business Informatics at the department of Empirical Human Sciences and Economics. As a part of the Institute of Applied Economic Research, they yield their technological expertise in economic research cooperation.

A special mission of the institute, which was founded by Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. August-Wilhelm Scheer in 1979, is the market-orientated implementation of technology from research to practice. The collaboration with small and midsize companies (KMU) has an important influence on the applied research work, as well as industrial projects are given a major significance.

The Institute for Business Informatics promotes future educational forms in the study of Business Informatics with new and advanced technologies. The WINFOLine-Plattform offers students of the Saarland University the possibility to follow up on local events and find information about nationwide teaching of Business Informatics, that can be credited for their studies. Vocational preparation courses and advanced training in Consulting, as well as practical projects prepare students for a career entry in the software and consultation business.
