The interdisciplinary Master's degree programme in Educational Technology is the only one of its kind in Germany. It creates a unique link between educational science and computer science by combining the disciplines of educational methodology, informatics and psychology. Educational technology experts examine such questions as how school students in the classroom or "friends" in social networks are applying new technology to accumulate, transfer and use knowledge. They develop new technologies for use in educational institutions and in continuous and further education programmes and are involved in the design of innovative learning environments.

The M.Sc. in Educational Technology is a cooperative programme organized jointly by the Department of Education and the Department of Computer Science at Saarland University, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and Saarland University of Applied Sciences (HTW). In addition to the core disciplines in computer science and education science, students can select course content from an extensive range of elective modules covering such areas as artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, and teaching and learning theories. As the modules and exams are in German and English, students must demonstrate excellent proficiency in both languages.

Graduates from the programme take up posts in companies, professional associations or in the adult education sector – areas that are frequently lacking in experts with a good understanding of new educational technologies and with experience in teaching and learning methodologies. Typically, graduates will be employed for research and development work on technology-assisted teaching and learning environments or on education and knowledge management systems, they may also be involved in curriculum planning or provide technology consulting and coordination services to companies or to secondary and tertiary education institutions, museums, libraries, political parties or NGOs.
