Applying online for admission to Saarland University

If you want to join a restricted-entry degree programme that is managed as part of the local admissions scheme, you will need to apply directly to Saarland University for admission using the online application form. You must follow this procedure regardless of whether you are applying to join the first semester of a degree programme or you are applying for higher-level entry. Please note that you will not normally be permitted to apply to join a programme in the first semester if you are already studying the same subject at another university in Germany. The online admission application form allows you to choose two programmes of study that are of equal priority and that will be processed as such.

The online application platform can only be accessed during the admission application periods.

Admission application periods
  • Winter semester: beginning of June until 15 July
  • Summer semester: beginning of December until 15 January


The date of your application will be the date on which your admission application form and all required documents are received by Saarland University (upload date). Please refer to the key dates for admission applications and enrolment.

Special regulations governing sports degrees

If you have received a letter of admission for the Bachelor's degree programme 'Sports Science' or to study sport as one of your subjects in a teacher training degree, your subsequent application for enrolment at the University must be accompanied by a silver or gold German DOSB Sports Badge (DOSB: German Olympic Sports Confederation), which you must have been awarded no more than 18 months prior to your application. If there are other qualifications or certificates that you would like to have recognized, please submit the appropriate documents together with a written request to:

Allocation of places

Places on locally managed restricted-entry degree programmes are allocated according to the following scheme (after first deducting those places awarded to applicants in specified priority groups):

  • 80% of places are awarded on the basis of the overall grade of the applicant's higher education entrance qualification
  • 20% of places are awarded on the basis of the time an applicant has spent on the programme waiting list


If places are still available once the main allocation phase has been concluded, these places are usually allocated in mid September on the basis of an ordered waiting list. Places can only be assigned in this way to applicants who submitted an application for admission as part of the normal allocation procedure and within the specified application deadline, but who were not initially successful.

Admission and enrolment

If your application for admission was successful, you will receive a letter of admission from Saarland University:

  • in August (if you applied to start in the winter semester)
  • in February (if you applied to start in the summer semester)


You must then enrol:

  • in August (for the winter semester)
  • in February (for the summer semester)
