Biophysics (B.Sc.)

Summary

The study of biological processes is making increasing use of the methods of the physical sciences; by applying the strategies and methodologies used in the physical sciences to biological problems, scientists are gaining new perspectives and insights into complex biological processes.

Around the world, there is a growing number of initiatives designed to train and educate scientists able to work at the interface of biology and physics. Saarland University’s B.Sc. programme in biophysics closely meshes the physical and life sciences and plays a pioneering role in this new area. Biophysics at Saarland University combines the content of a physics degree with the opportunity to acquire an understanding of the fundamentals of biology, with undergraduates using this foundation to deepen and extend their interests in more specialist fields.

The six-semester Bachelor’s programme in biophysics, which concludes with the award of a Bachelor of Science degree (B.Sc.), has been designed to provide students with an opportunity to acquire at an early stage of their studies the skills and methods required by today’s biophysicists. The curriculum is structured so that once students have acquired the requisite fundamentals in the mathematical and physical sciences, they will be in a position to solve technical and scientific problems, particularly those found at the boundary between physics and biology. Students will also learn how to tackle complex questions by applying modern experimental techniques and computer-assisted mathematical methods.

The thorough but broad-based education that biophysicists enjoy makes them highly sought-after in areas such as medical technology, biotechnology and in academic research institutions. There is currently a high level of demand for highly qualified and broadly educated scientists in these sectors.

Programme schedule

Students will receive a thorough grounding in the core areas of the physical and biological sciences. Important mathematical principles are also taught. Besides lectures covering experimental and theoretical physics, students will also attend lecture courses in biology (zoology, cell biology, genetics, microbiology), biochemistry and mathematics. The B.Sc. curriculum also includes special courses that treat important interdisciplinary aspects of biophysics. Lab courses in physics, biophysics and biology ensure that students acquire the relevant practical and experimental expertise. The Bachelor’s programme concludes with students applying what they have learnt in a research project carried out within a research group working in the field of physics, biophysics or biology.


Darüber hinaus ist unter bestimmten Bedingungen (z.B. bestimmte Schwerpunktsetzung im Bachelorbereich, Nachholen einzelner Module u.ä.) der Zugang zu weiteren Masterstudiengängen möglich, z.B.: Physik (Master of Science).

Bewerbung

Der Studiengang unterliegt keiner Zulassungsbeschränkung. Die Aufnahme des Studiums ist zum Winter- und zum Sommersemester möglich.

Die Einschreibung (Immatrikulation) erfolgt ohne vorherige Bewerbung

  • für ein Wintersemester von Anfang August bis Ende September und
  • für ein Sommersemester von Anfang bis Ende März.
