Dr. Mihaela Vela
I am a researcher and lecturer at the Department of Language Science and Technology at Saarland University. My main areas of research are translation and translation technologies with a specific focus on machine translation evaluation and post-editing.
I am also a member of the collaborative research center (SFB) Information Density and Linguistic Encoding@UdS. In project B7 - Modelling Human Translation with a Noisy Channel - we are trying to computationally model translation with respect to its two main objectives, source language fidelity and target language conformity. Here you can find a list of the projects I am/have been involved.
I am teaching mainly courses related to language technology for future translators in the Master programme Translation Science and Technology. Here is a list of the courses I taught.
Before moving to the Department of Applied Linguistics and Translation, I worked as a researcher in the Language Technology Lab at DFKI in Saarbrücken, Germany (2007-2011).
I received a PhD in Computational Linguistics from Saarland University in 2011 with the thesis Extraction of Ontology Schema Components from Financial News. I was supervised by Hans Uszkoreit and Thierry Declerck from the Language Technology Lab at DFKI in Saarbrücken, Germany.
I received a Diploma degree in Computational Linguistics in 2005 from Saarland University, and a Licentiate degree in German and English Linguistics in 2001 from West University of Timisoara, Romania.
A list of my publications can be found here.
