Saarbrücken is the capital of Saarland, the smallest territorial state of the Federal Republic of Germany and the last to have joined the Federation in 1957. It is located in the southwest at the French border, on the transport axis Frankfurt – Paris, making it easily reachable via direct train connections from Frankfurt International Airport (FRA).
The wealth of coal and iron ore deposits have shaped the history of Saarland as an important center of coal and steel industry. With the steady decline of coal and iron ore mining, the reshaping of Saarland into a center of innovation in the heart of Europe is underway. The geographical location in the border triangle with France and Luxembourg results in the typical Saarland lifestyle with elements from French and German culture, particularly visible in the great food that is served in both affordable eateries and Michelin-starred restaurants. In close distance to the urban area of Greater Saarbrücken, vast forests in a hilly countryside invite to hiking. The name “Saarland” originates from the river “Saar” and its famous loop “Saarschleife”, as well as the UNESCO World Heritage ironworks “Völklinger Hütte” are the most famous sites to be visited.
