December 18th, 2001: Aesthetics and Ideology: Criticism in Postcolonial Times
The context of the lecture is the recent assault on the category of the aesthetic from all kinds of overtly 'political' if not 'politically correct' criticism. Arguing that art certainly reflects the material conditions of its production but is not entirely bound by them, the speaker proposes that the aesthetic is perhaps the only space left for criticism itself under the overwhelming dominance of the economic. How to construct a genuinely engaged postcolonial praxis under these conditions is the questionhat the lecture hopes to raise.
