Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Admission applications and enrolment

I will only receive my school leaving certificate / higher education entrance qualification after the admission application deadline. What can I do?

The application deadlines are 'strict' deadlines in the sense that all of the necessary documentation must have been uploaded in the SIM application portal before the submission deadline expires. If you do not upload all of the documents in time, your application for admission will not be processed. Documents cannot be uploaded after the application deadline has expired. In this case, your only option is to reapply in the following semester.

My German is not good enough. What should I do?

If you have a recognized higher education entrance qualification that provides direct access to university study in Germany and you want to apply to Saarland University to study for an undergraduate degree but your German language skills are not yet good enough, you can apply for a place on a preparatory German language course  that will prepare you to take the DSH language exam.

How will the grade(s) on my school leaving certificate be converted into the equivalent overall grade in the German system?

When determining equivalent overall grades for foreign school leaving certificates / higher education entrance qualifications, both uni-assist and Saarland University follow

  • the guidance issued by the Kultusministerkonferenz [Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs] and
  • the country-specific proposals for grade assessment and conversion published by Germany's Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB – Zentralstelle für ausländische Bildungsabschlüsse) in the anabin database.
Can I be admitted to or enrol at Saarland University if I have an International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB)?

Saarland University accepts the International Baccalaureate Diploma (Diplôme du Baccalauréat International) as issued by the International Baccalaureate Organization (Office du Baccalauréat International) as a valid higher education entrance qualification provided that it was awarded after the applicant attended at least twelve years of full-time education in ascending year groups, and if certain other criteria have been met.

When will I be told whether my application for admission has been successful?

You will receive notification of whether or not your application was successful within four weeks after the submission deadline. Admission is granted only for the programme of study and semester that you specified on your application form. Please note that we are unable to provide information on the status of your application until after the submission deadline.

Preliminary review documentation from uni-assist

I will only receive my preliminary review documentation after the admission application deadline.

We therefore strongly recommend that you take into account the processing times at uni-assist and that you submit your request for preliminary review documentation at the earliest opportunity. If you do not upload your preliminary review documentation to Saarland University before the submission deadline expires, your only option will be to reapply in the following semester.

Will Saarland University accept my preliminary review documentation if it was issued for another university?

Yes

If I have completed the higher education assessment test (Feststellungsprüfung), do I still need to submit preliminary review documentation?

Yes, you do, because successfully completing a higher education preparatory course at a Studienkolleg will influence how uni-assist assesses your foreign school leaving certificate / higher education entrance qualification.
