About the speaker

Prof. James D. Johnson is an internationally recognized expert in pancreatic islet biology and diabetes research. His laboratory investigates the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate pancreatic β-cell function, survival, adaptation, and regeneration in health and diabetes. His work has provided important insights into hyperinsulinemia, β-cell stress responses, sex differences in diabetes susceptibility, and the development of stem cellderived β cells for regenerative therapies. In addition to leading an internationally recognized research program at The University of British Columbia, he serves as Associate Executive Director of the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, where he oversees fundamental and preclinical research programs.
