Global Health and Tropical Medicine
The working group on Global Health and Parasitology at IMMH conducts research projects that build on long-standing collaborations with partners from the Global South, particularly in West Africa (Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau) and South Asia (Indonesia). It aims to collaboratively and equitably conduct research focusing on three main areas: (1) development and validation of new diagnostic tools for neglected infectious diseases, such as MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry for helminthic diseases (2) assessment of the epidemiology and clinical morbidity of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as strongyloidiasis in Indonesia, and (3) the underappreciated burden of antimicrobial resistance in the Global South. With regard to the latter topic, the working group coordinates an international, EDCTP3-funded project that tries to improve the management of severe infections due to multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria in West-Africa (Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau) through access to new antibiotics with activity against carbapenem-resistant pathogens.
