Academic training programme

The academic training programme offered at the Saarbrücken Graduate School for European Research aims to provide members comprehensive further education in their own field as well as in a broad, interdisciplinary context. The programme provides members a wide range of opportunities to discuss their projects, research questions and methodology. To continue progressing within their discipline, Graduate School members can participate in in-person courses and specialized colloquia as well as workshops on methodology of the social sciences, law and cultural studies. They can also develop interdisciplinary competencies in cross-disciplinary colloquia and conferences and reading groups on specific topics. Working groups give members the opportunity to foster concrete collaboration between individuals, both within the same field and across subjects.

Saarland University professors working within the 'Europe' core research area supervise doctoral students and mentor postdocs at the Saarbrücken Graduate School for European Research. The Graduate School encourages and supports doctoral supervision and mentoring across disciplines and borders. Doctoral students can be jointly supervised by a professor from another university (for example, by professors from the University of the Greater Region or Transform4Europe alliances or from other European universities).

Specialized training and interdisciplinary competencies

Working groups

The Graduate School is home to a range of small, self-organized working groups that meet regularly to discuss a topic of their choice. Affiliated postdocs organize the groups on a rotating basis. The working groups promote cooperation on specific subjects between research fellows both across and within disciplines and aim to produce an output – such as a publication – whenever possible.
