The meaning of a text is not simply the sum of the meaning of individual sentences. The relations between sentences and phrases also contribute to the overall meaning, and these are called discourse relations.

While discourse relations are crucial in language processing, the phenomenon is not fully  understood in various aspects. In terms of human recognition, for example, there is not yet consensus on how many different discourse relations are recognized by humans; and how humans interpret ambiguous discourse relations. From the NLP Point of view, implicit discourse relations classification remains a bottleneck in language understanding, although promising improvement has been achieved by deep representation learning. Related to both human and machine processing, discourse relations annotated corpora are valuable resources to train and evaluate models and hypotheses.

Are traditional resources adequate and how should discourse relations be annotated?

The seminar brings together studies from areas of psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, NLP and corpus linguistics that are related to discourse relation processing. Participants will present papers in turn, followed by group discussion. We hope to find some cross-disciplinary insights on the discourse phenomenom.
