Kühborth-Foundation GmbH
The aim of the foundation, which was established by the Honorary Senator of Saarland University Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Wolfgang Kühborth, who died in 2017, and his wife Helga Kühborth, is to promote research and teaching in the fields of natural sciences, technical sciences and economics. With this in mind, the founders transferred their share in Klein Pumpen GmbH (today: Johannes und Jacob Klein GmbH) to the foundation in 1994.
As the holding company, Johannes und Jacob Klein GmbH holds more than 75 percent of the ordinary shares in KSB SE & Co. KGaA, which is one of the world's largest manufacturers of pumps and valves. The main shareholder of this holding company is the KSB Foundation, which, thanks to Dr. Wolfgang Kühborth's bequest/ renunciation of inheritance, also promotes the natural sciences and young scientists and supports the Association of Friends of Saarland University.
Sponsorship awards from the Kühborth Foundation
The Kühborth Foundation's sponsorship awards have been presented to graduates from various universities since 1999. From 2007 to 2015, only graduates of Saarland University received this award. “Short study time - brilliant exams": in line with this principle, the Kühborth Foundation awarded three sponsorship prizes each year to the best graduates from the Faculty of Science and Technology. With this award, the Kühborth Foundation wanted to encourage students to pursue a determined education with above-average performance.
Since 2018, the Kühborth Foundation has been supporting the progress of artificial intelligence (AI) by awarding two prizes each year, the ELLIS PhD Awards. Outstanding doctoral theses by European AI researchers are honored after selection and evaluation by ELLIS, the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems. The contact partner of the Kühborth Foundation in connection with the ELLIS PhD Award is the Max Planck Institute for Informatics in Saarbrücken.
