Sprachpraxis (Language Learning)
The main aims of the Sprachpraxis section are:
- to help students reach the level of English required for their degree programme, approximately CEFR level C1 for BA degrees and level C2 for Lehramt degrees, enabling them to use English appropriately in a wide range of situations.
- to equip students with the language skills needed in other sections of the department (e.g. Literature, Linguistics, Cultural Studies, and Fachdidaktik) as well as in professional English-speaking environments.
Please note that the CEFR levels referred to here are reference points for the language proficiency expected in our programmes; our Language in Use exams do not constitute official C1 or C2 certification.
Students studying English as part of a Lehramt degree are also expected
- to familiarise themselves with analytical and pedagogical approaches to spoken and written English, and
- to acquire the language needed in the school classroom.
The Sprachpraxis section offers classes ranging from general language courses to specialised courses dealing with specific aspects such as phonetics and phonology. In addition, students gain a great deal of practice through the use of English in the other sections of this department. The compulsory stay abroad or mobility phase also provides an important opportunity to develop students’ language skills through sustained use of English in an English-speaking environment.
The step from the level of English typically reached at school (i.e. Abitur) to the advanced proficiency expected in an English degree programme (C1/C2) is often greater than students expect. Students need to appreciate that a considerable amount of time and effort must be invested to reach this level. In other words, the Abitur should be seen as a starting point rather than the end point of advanced language development.
