Junior Professor Dr. Luis Linares Otoya

I am a microbiologist and chemical biologist interested in how bacteria interact and adapt in complex ecosystems. I earned my Ph.D. at the University of Bonn, where I studied the biosynthesis of bacterial small molecules in the Schäberle lab. I then moved to Justus Liebig University Giessen as a postdoc, where I developed genetic tools for non-model Bacteroidota. As a Principal Investigator at the National University of Trujillo, I studied the regulation of secondary metabolism in marine Bacteroidota. I later joined Princeton University as a postdoctoral researcher in Mohamed Donia’s lab, where I expanded my work to host-associated Bacteroidota and their interactions in the human microbiome. Since August 2026, I have been a Junior Professor of Microbiology at Saarland University.
