42. Tagung des GDM-Arbeitskreises Geometrie 2026

As part of the Faculty MI, the Department of Mathematics is located in the buildings E1.1, E1.7, E2.4 and E2.5. Currently, 18 professors teach and conduct research in our department.
The mathematical areas in Saarbrücken are:
- Algebra and algebraic Geometry
- Applied Analysis
- Functional Analysis
- Mathematical Data Analysis
- Numerical Mathematics
- Stochastics and Financial and Insurance Mathematics
- Mathematical Didactics
There is close collaboration with the Department of Computer Science, particularly through three joint professorships that are based in both the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Computer Science. The exchange between the two departments creates ideal conditions for interdisciplinary research and teaching, from which all mathematics study programs—especially the “Mathematics and Computer Science” program—benefit. The department is also part of the Saarland Informatic Campus (SIC), which facilitates collaborations with the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), and the Center for Bioinformatics. Both students and researchers benefit from the internationally renowned research institutes located on campus.
Affiliated with the Department of Mathematics is the Center for Quantum Technologies (QuTe), which was newly established in 2025. In collaboration with Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), an interdisciplinary team from the fields of physics, mathematics, computer science, and engineering is developing scalable quantum systems, innovative quantum algorithms, and software for quantum computers.
Studying in this department thus offers optimal conditions and opportunities to engage with current research on future technologies.
In addition, our department is part of the Transregional Collaborative Research Center 195, “Symbolic Tools in Mathematics and Their Applications.” This center is now in its third funding period since 2025. Members of this consortium include the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, RWTH Aachen University, and Saarland University. In addition, the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Natural Sciences in Leipzig, the University of Stuttgart, the Technical University of Berlin, and the University of Tübingen are also involved.
Our goal in this department is to introduce students to academic work and the research projects of our faculty early on. We achieve this in particular through intensive mentoring and a close-knit atmosphere, which we value highly. In the first few semesters, the seminars that accompany the lectures consist of groups with a maximum of 15 participants, which allows for direct and easy interaction with the lecturers and the respective lecture teams.
