Marco Strauch - IT technician

Came, loved it, stayed! Marco Strauch is a prime example of this phenomenon. The IT technician began his vocational training with us at Saarland University in 1999. This was still back in the days of the office machine workshop, where he learned to repair typewriters, printers, fax machines and other such equipment. Since then, he has always worked for Saarland University in various departments. After completing his training, Marco Strauch transferred to the copying and printing department and then in 2010 to the University IT Centre, or HIZ for short, where he still works in the Service Department today.

"I am happy to be able to help my colleagues with IT problems and questions."

Solving IT problems is Marco's daily business. Be it software, hardware, PCs or printers, he takes care of it all. Every day he receives requests for help from colleagues all over the university, including from the Homburg campus. The jobs come in via the ticket system and he deals with them one by one. That's exactly what he likes about his work: not knowing what tasks the day has in store and reacting spontaneously to different requests and solving problems. From time to time, he also provides support with specific projects, such as system migrations. Marco Strauch's five years as Deputy Head of Service at HIZ were both a special time and a challenge. He learned a great deal in this role and gained a new perspective on the tasks and structures at the university.

Strauch's Wanderlust

A highlight of Marco Strauch's time here at Saarland University was being asked by the University Sports Center to take over the hikes that are offered as part of the sports programme, providing the perfect combination of leisure and work. Since 2022, he has been offering hikes at the university in collaboration with his wife. As they are both certified hiking guides, it’s the ideal task for them. Three hikes are organized every semester that are open to students, employees and external persons. While Marco hasn't quite turned his hobby into his profession, he has integrated it well into his working life. And if you enjoy hiking, are looking for inspiration or perhaps you are simply curious, you can follow 'Strauch's Wanderlust' online on Instagram, YouTube and Facebook – then sign up for a group hike yourself via the University Sports Center or go hiking under your own steam! When asked which hiking trail is the best, Marco Strauch recommends the 'Schauinslandweg' premium hiking trail near Ottweiler.
