Who can get a scholarship?

Potential – social engagement – suitability: These three aspects sum up the criteria that many scholarship providers use to decide who receives funding and who does not. Students who would like to apply for a scholarship should ideally meet the following requirements:

  • Good performance at school and university
  • Voluntary engagement or family commitment: This includes voluntary work for the common good – for example in the social, cultural or political field, or as part of an organization that shares the same values as the funding provider. Family responsibilities such as caring for family members or supporting siblings can also be recognized as a form of commitment.
  • The scholarship providers support individuals who meet their respective eligibility criteria – for example achievements, engagement or commitment, personal background or shared values (e.g. in the case of the Begabtenförderwerke – German organizations for the promotion of gifted students).

Scholarships for all study phases

Students in undergraduate degree programmes

Many scholarship programmes provide funding from the first semester onwards. Depending on the programme, applications are also possible in higher semesters. The eligibility requirements vary depending on the scholarship provider: some programmes require BAföG entitlement or are aimed exclusively at students here in Saarland.

Master's and doctoral research students

For students in Master's degree programmes, funding usually begins before or at the start of the Master's programme. For doctoral research students, there are specially tailored doctoral scholarships.

International students in Germany

A number of funding organizations and programmes are aimed specifically at international students who are studying in Germany – often only from the Master's degree onwards. A good place to start looking for suitable scholarships is the DAAD scholarship database.

Students during a stay abroad

Special scholarship programmes are also available for German students who would like to complete part of their studies or an internship abroad. It is even possible to find funding for an entire degree programme abroad. The DAAD scholarship database provides a good overview of suitable funding opportunities.
