The application process varies depending on the scholarship provider. Foundations with a smaller organizational framework or scholarships for specific topic areas often have leaner procedures. With larger funding organizations, such as the Begabtenförderwerke for gifted students, the process is usually more structured and involves more requirements. It is therefore worth checking the application process carefully in advance – and not being put off by the anticipated effort involved. It is advisable to plan your application in three steps:

  1. Check whether you meet the requirements of the scholarship provider
  2. Prepare all application documents carefully
  3. Submit your application by the application deadline

Check the application requirements

  • Do you belong to the target group of the scholarship programme?
  • Are you at the right stage in your studies?
  • Do you have a very good level of academic achievement?
  • Can you demonstrate sufficient social engagement?

Application documents

  • Application form: Fill in the form as soon as possible and check carefully that you have completed everything.
  • Personal statement (letter of motivation): explain why you are applying for this particular scholarship, what goals you are pursuing and how the financial support can support you on your path. You should also refer to the foundation's values and goals – explain why these are in line with your own ideas and social engagement.
  • CV: List your academic background, relevant internships, voluntary work, special experiences and language skills in a structured manner.
  • Letter of recommendation: Ask your lecturers, employers or mentors to evaluate your aptitude and engagement – if possible with specific reference to your application.
  • Proof of social engagement: Obtain confirmation from organizations, associations or initiatives in which you are or have been active.
  • Proof of academic achievements: This includes current academic achievements, higher education entrance qualification, any reports from lecturers or other performance-related documents.
  • Proof of income: For income-dependent scholarships, submit information about your financial circumstances (e.g. letter of notification from the BAföG office, proof of income).

What do I need to pay attention to in my application documents?

  • The content of your documents should be structured correctly and coherently.
  • Use short and concise phrasing.
  • Provide your full personal details.
  • Emphasize the elements of your application that connect you with the scholarship provider.
  • Convey self-confidence and enjoyment of your work and activities.
  • State that you are available to answer questions and can provide further information.

Application deadlines

Application deadlines vary depending on the provider and scholarship programme – it is therefore important to check the exact deadlines directly with each scholarship provider.

The following time periods are often used as a guideline for the Begabtenförderwerke for gifted students:

  • January to March: For scholarships beginning in the winter semester
  • July to September: For scholarships beginning in the summer semester

Tip: Find out information early on – many applications take some time to prepare, especially if you need to obtain letters of recommendation or reports.
