Sarajevo Flatness Course

Flatness based control of nonlinear systems

Flatness based control is a modern approach for controlling nonlinear systems. Not only do the flatness based methods increasingly find their way into the academic curricula but they also bear a special significance for the industrial application with many implementations to date.

During the week of October 7-11, 2013 a course on "Flatness based control of nonlinear systems" was held at the University of Sarajevo in cooperation with Prof. Dr. A. Tahirovic (University of Sarajevo) and Prof. Dr. I. Petrovic (University of Zagreb). Prof. Dr. A. Tahirovic played host to the course at Elektrotehnički fakultet, Sarajevo, Federacija Bosne i Hercegovine.

The course was taught by Prof. Dr.-Ing. J. Rudolph from Saarland University who has been working in the field of flatness based control for over 20 years. He was assisted by Dr.-Ing. F. Woittennek (TU Dresden) and N. Gehring (Saarland University). Over 50 students and researchers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Mecedonia, and Montenegro actively participated. Thanks to the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), financial support covering travel expenses and accommodation costs could be granted to non-locals.

Main course topics

  • definition of flatness
  • state concept
  • trajectory planning and tracking control
  • classification of state feedbacks
  • design of stabilizing state feedbacks
  • tracking observer

The topics were illustrated by means of several technological examples in both the lectures and the exercises.
