Licensed veterinarian wanted as a doctoral candidate

One focus of our research group is to investigate the function of 'a disintegrin and metalloproteinases' (ADAMs) in acute and chronic inflammatory diseases. This includes both sterile inflammation and infections. The COVID-19 pandemic has once again shown us that susceptibility to disease, inflammatory responses and disease progression are influenced by biological sex. As part of the newly founded Center for Gender-Sensitive Biology and Medicine (CGMB), this aspect of our research is to be strengthened. To this end, we are looking for a doctoral student to start as soon as possible. In addition to standard molecular pharmacology, molecular biology and cell biology approaches, you will use methods for single cell analysis, FACS and mass spectrometry (proteomics) and experimental approaches to organoids and organ-on-a-chip. The work is integrated into the Preclinical Center for Molecular Signal Processing (PZMS) at the Homburg campus of Saarland University and includes the characterization of human samples as well as analysis and veterinary observation in animal models. For this reason, this call for applications is explicitly aimed at licensed persons with a degree in veterinary medicine. The two strategic alliances University of the Greater Region and Transform4Europe strengthen the international character of the university and offer numerous opportunities for stays abroad. Homburg is home to Saarland University Hospital and is located in a rural area, which means that the cost of living is significantly lower in comparison. Furthermore, there are numerous day-care centers and schools in the immediate vicinity of your home and workplace.

Our working group is dedicated to the research on the function of a disintegrin and metalloproteinases (ADAMs) in acute and chronic inflammatory diseases with focus on infectious diseases. The tumor necroses factor alpha (TNF) and the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), central in COVID-19, the amyloid precursor protein (APP), central in Alzheimer Disease, and ADAM10 as receptor for Staphylococcusaureus a-hemolysin are only a few examples to highlight the relevance of our target molecules for therapeutic intervention.

At the moment, we are looking for doctorial candidates as support of our research team within

the central relevance of the ADAM network for control of inflammatory disease

Beside common molecular biological and biochemical methods you will use qRT-PCR, gene chip analyses, FACS and mass spectrometry for transcriptome and proteome analysis. You will work with outstanding cell culture and infection models as well as imaging systems supported by experienced scientists and technicians.

Qualifications: 

• MSc/equivalent for PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g. cell biology, biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, pharmacy, pharmacology) 
• requited experiences: Lab experience in cellular and molecular biology techniques
• definite plus: experience in (primary) cell culture, cloning, immunohistochemistry, FelaseB certificate
• Team-worker with a high grade of responsibility and flexibility
