The demand for professional translators and language experts is steadily increasing worldwide, especially due to the significant advancements in machine translation. Individuals who can engage with language, translation, and language technology professionally and on a scientific basis are always in high demand!
Graduates have a wide range of career opportunities available to them: potential employers include globally operating language services, industrial conglomerates, and government agencies. Large international organizations and the European Union have a substantial need for competent translators with digital expertise. Another attractive option is pursuing a self-employed career as a freelancer. Opportunities in the application and development of language services and project management are just as open to you as an academic career in research, starting with a Ph.D. The new and highly qualified Master's program in "Linguistics and Language Technology" at the University of Saarland offers the study and application of a unique integration of career-focused and promising modules for the translator profession of the future.

Personal requirements:
- Interest in languages (German, English, and a Romance language) and their practical and scientific exploration.
- Open-mindedness towards topics in computer science and mathematics. You don't need to be a math genius; the necessary fundamentals will be taught in specially tailored courses (statistics).
- Willingness to combine: shape the study focus according to your preferences.
- University Entrance Qualification
- At least one foreign language:
- English is mandatory at B2 level
- When choosing the specialization in Translation and European Languages:
- French: B2 level
- Spanish, Italian: A2 level
- Italian an Spanish can also be studied without prior knowlegde

No, a stay abroad is not a mandatory part of the program, but it is highly recommended. A great opportunity for a study abroad experience is provided by the ERASMUS+ program of the European Union. The ERASMUS office of our department (Language Science and Language Technology) is available to advise and support you. Here, you can find partner universities of our department for studying and internships.

Graduates of the Language Science program have career prospects in a variety of fields that are linguistically oriented, either directly or indirectly. These fields include not only traditional media (radio, television, publishing) but also well-established and emerging fields in new media. Depending on their specialization, these may include roles in advertising, social networks, smaller and larger internet services, as well as areas related to (machine) translation.
