ACM SAC 2023: Track on Privacy by Design in Practice
The 6th edition of the Privacy by Design in Practice track at the
38th ACM/SIGAPP Symposium on Applied Computing
March 27 – April 2, 2023 / Tallinn, Estonia
The Privacy by Design in Practice (PDP) track
The aim of this track is to promote research on privacy-preserving technologies to be used in practice. “Privacy by Design” (PbD) is a requirement in the new EU data protection regulation, which is applied in the EU countries from May 2018. Thus, privacy needs to be considered by engineers from the beginning and built in to newly developed systems properly. A lot of research has been done in the field of privacy-enhancing technologies (PETS) in the past years. However, very few of those approaches have found their way into practice. The ACM Symposium on Applied Computing (SAC) provides a great opportunity for researchers to present practical research on privacy by design, leading to more privacy-friendly technology in the future. Another rationale for having the proposed track in SAC is the conference’s diverse research agenda and, thus, researchers participating from different fields of computer science. The track can thus promote the (legal) need to deal with privacy protection to those people who perform research on new technology. Legal researchers bringing in their view on privacy protection are also very welcome to submit papers to this track to foster multi-disciplinary research. The track is also be of interest for data protection agencies (DPAs), as they need to deal with PbD as well.
Topics of the track include, among others:
Privacy Engineering
Anonymization and Pseudonymization
Privacy in the Internet of Things (e.g. Smart Home, Smart City, Connected Cars, Smart TV, Smart Grid, etc.)
Privacy and Quantified Self
International Privacy Laws and their impacts on technology
Conflict between Privacy and Security
…

Submission Guidelines
The submission guidelines must be strictly followed for a paper to be considered.
Original papers from the above mentioned or other related areas will be considered. Only full papers about original and unpublished research are sought. Parallel submission to other conferences or other tracks of SAC 2023 is forbidden. Each paper must be BLIND in the sense that it must only include its title but not mention anything about its authors. Self-citation must be in third person, such as "Smith et al. [citation] showed...". All submissions must be formatted using the ACM conference-specific LaTeX style, which can be obtained from the symposium web page. The standard extension of a submission in the stated format is 8 pages. Longer papers (up to 10 pages maximum) will imply an additional charge. All papers must be submitted by the deadline stated above.
Papers must be submitted through the symposium-wide paper management system for SAC 2023.
Review and publication of accepted papers
Each paper will be fully refereed and undergo a blind review process by at least three referees. Accepted papers will be published in the ACM SAC 2023 proceedings. Some papers may only be accepted as poster papers, and will be published as extended 3-page (+ 1 page possible at extra charge) abstracts in the proceedings. According to the authors' guidelines, which can be obtained from the symposium web page (https://www.sigapp.org/sac/sac2023/), at least one author per accepted paper must register before the paper is included in the proceedings.
Paper registration is required, allowing the inclusion of the papers and posters in the conference proceedings. An author or a proxy attending SAC MUST present the paper. This is a requirement for all accepted papers, posters, and invited SRC submissions to be included in the ACM digital library.
No-show of scheduled papers, posters, and student research abstracts will result in excluding them from the ACM digital library.
Student research abstract competition
Graduate students are invited to submit research abstracts (maximum of 4 pages) following the instructions published at SAC 2023 website. Submission of the same abstract to multiple tracks is not allowed.
