Faculties
The executive board is responsible for the day-to-day organization and thematic focus of the Graduate School. This board is divided into three main sections:
- Scientific leads
- Currently (October 2026 - March 2027): Prof. Daniela Braun / Prof. Ingmar Weber
- Main tasks:
- Scientific representation of the Graduate School
- Determining the scientific-thematic focus of the Graduate School
- Representatives of supervisors
- Representation of the currently supervising professors
- Main tasks:
- Conducting scientific research
- Supervising SOUNDS PhD students
- Acquiring third-party funding
- Organizational leads
- Organizational leadership of the Graduate School
- Currently (October 2026 - March 2027): Dr. Anke Köhler / Dr. Martin Ulrich
- Main tasks:
- Developing and mentoring the qualification programme
- Supervising the SOUNDS advisory contracts
Besides the supervisors, each PhD student will be supported by a mentor. Mentors are members of SOUNDS or externals holding a PhD that are not involved in supervising or evaluating the dissertation. They offer support beyond the supervision of the dissertation (e.g., support in publications, help in labs, life on campus).
Supervision
Every PhD student is supported by two supervisors: a primary supervisor and a secondary supervisor. The faculty of the primary supervisor will be the faculty in which the PhD student will complete their PhD.
The team of supervisors is interdisciplinary, with both being situated in a different faculty to best support the PhD students in their interdisciplinary research. The supervisors support the PhD student in their research process by regular mentoring and giving constructive criticism to the PhD project, ensuring the necessary infrastructure for the research, and enabling their PhD students in publication and networking.
