Scholarships are a great way to help fund your studies – and often you don't have to have top grades or demonstrate financial hardship to qualify. There are a wide range of scholarships available designed for different student demographics, fields of study and personal circumstances. So it's worth exploring what's out there and finding the ones that suit you best.
Scholarship programmes at a glance
There are numerous organizations in Germany that offer scholarships to gifted students. These organizations, which include party-affiliated bodies, trade unions, business-friendly organizations and religious or denominational groups, award scholarships on the basis of their own internal award criteria. The following link provides a list of university contacts who can provide advice on specific scholarships.
Deutschlandstipendium is Germany's national scholarship programme. The scholarships are awarded by Saarland University with administrative support provided by the foundation 'StudienStiftungSaar'. In addition to good academic grades, the selection procedure takes into account an applicant's social or community activities and their personal circumstances. Applications must be submitted via the StudienStiftungSaar online application portal.
The scholarships provided by the StudienStiftungSaar are awarded to students studying at higher education institutions in Saarland. As well as monthly financial support, scholarship holders have access to workshops and seminars and benefit from personalized mentoring and coaching.
A number of friends and supporters of Saarland University offer scholarships and other forms of financial support to students at Saarland University. Please note that some of these awards are restricted to specific subject areas or topics.
There are several scholarship programmes specifically designed to support students who want to spend time studying abroad. For more information, please contact the university's GoOut! Service Center or visit the DAAD scholarships and funding options web page.
The uplift scholarship programme Aufstiegsstipendium is designed to open up new career development opportunities for people who have completed a vocational training programme and have at least two years of experience working in their field. Applications can be submitted before the start of the degree programme and up until the end of the second semester.
Starting in the winter semester of 2024/2025, Saarland will be providing a total of 22 'BerufsSaarländer*in' scholarships each year to students who choose to study a STEM subject (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Scholarship holders receive a monthly grant of €850 and must undertake to work in one of the Saarland state administrative agencies for at least five years after graduating. The TÜV Saarland Foundation (TÜV Saarland Stiftung) offers financial assistance to young people with a higher education entrance qualification who want to study a technical subject, economics, sustainable development or social sciences at a higher education institution in Saarland. By providing funding, networking opportunities and skills training, the programme seeks to nurture and empower young talent. Further information is available from the TÜV Saarland Foundation website.
This scholarship is for students starting the first semester of a Master's degree in electrical engineering or computer science. Scholarship holders receive €850 per month for the entire duration of their studies. After graduation, you'll be offered an employment contract at Saarland University and commit to a minimum of five years' work in facility management or IT. The goal of this scholarship is to transition you into a permanent position.
The Digitale Bildung (digital education) scholarship offers students on teacher training degree programmes free, one-year access to online training courses, webinars and networking sessions. Students who successfully complete the scholarship programme receive a digital education and media skills certificate. The scholarship is open to students on teacher training degree programmes (from their first semester onwards) as well as to students on the Bachelor's or Master's of Education programmes or the Business and Economics Education programme.
