Interactions Between Macrophages and Lung Epithelia: Mechanical Properties of Cellular Contacts and Implications for Collective Dynamics

Hi, I'm Lena

I'm a PhD student in biophysical chemistry at the Georg-August University Göttingen, where I study the mechanical interactions between alveolar lung epithelium and alveolar macrophages. In my free time, I enjoy reading and traveling. Discovering new places reflects the curiosity that drives me both scientifically and personally and inspires me just as much as my research.

Lizhen Chen - Postdoc

Interactions Between Macrophages and Lung Epithelia: Mechanical Properties of Cellular Contacts and Implications for Collective Dynamics

My research explores how mechanical signals are integrated to regulate cellular behavior at the lung interface between alveolar macrophages and epithelial cells. Outside the lab, I enjoy playing table tennis, swimming, and spending time with friends to relax and recharge.

Zuzana Outlá - Postdoc

Heterotypic Cell-Cell Interactions in Intestinal Epithelial Cell State Evolution during Tissue Homeostasis and Cancer Onset

Zuzana is interested in how tissue architecture, cell mechanics, and cell states evolve during the onset and early progression of colorectal cancer. Outside the lab, she enjoys dancing, running, and hiking.

Ann-Kathrin Burkhart - Postdoc

Heterotypic Cell-Cell Interactions in the Control of Epidermal Integrity and Function

My research focuses on heterotypic cell–cell interactions in the skin. I aim to decipher how epithelial keratinocytes and epidermis-resident Langerhans cells interact with each other and how they instruct the localization of sensory neurons within the epidermis.
In my free time, I spend time outdoors climbing, biking, surfing, or hiking with friends.

Mechanical Stretch of Alveolar Epithelia Induces Heterotypic Activation of Alveolar Macrophages

I am a PhD student in Molecular Medicine at Ulm University, where I investigate how mechanical stretch affects interactions between alveolar macrophages and alveolar epithelial cells. My work centers on developing human iPSC-based in vitro models to study immune epithelial communication in the lung. Outside the lab, I enjoy cycling, hiking, and traveling. Being active outdoors provides a good balance to research and helps me stay focused and motivated.

Shashank Jaitly - PhD student

Heterologous Cell-Cell Interactions at the Embryo-Maternal Interface during Implantation

My research focuses on deciphering the cellular mechanisms that mediate interactions between the implanting embryo and uterine epithelia. Outside of work, I enjoy travelling, watching Formula 1 and playing video games.

Lara Heckmann - PhD student

Heterologous Interactions between the Follicle Epithelium and Germline Cells - Self-Organization of Egg Chamber Morphogenesis in the Drosophila Ovary

Hi, I’m Lara, a PhD student in Anne Classen’s lab at the University of Freiburg. My research focuses on identifying cell lineage–specific proteins that drive interactions between the follicle epithelium and germline cells in Drosophila. Alongside wet lab experiments, I also enjoy expanding my skills in bioinformatic analysis. Outside the lab, I am a trainer and national player for underwater hockey. In my free time, I also enjoy dancing and playing DnD.

Tissue-specific roles and mechanisms of intraepithelial mucosal mast cell/epithelial cell interaction in mucosal barrier function in homeostasis and inflammation

My research investigates heterotypic cell–cell interactions between intraepithelial mucosal mast cells and epithelial cells, and how these interactions shape the mucosal barrier in homeostasis, inflammation and tissue repair. In my free time, I enjoy playing football, reading, and spending time outdoors with my dog.
