Systems Engineering M.Sc.

Requirements

If you hold a Bachelor's degree in systems engineering or a related field—such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics or microsystems technology—and are looking to advance your skills in an innovative field, our M.Sc. programme in Systems Engineering is for you!

Key facts
  • Mode of study: Full-time or part-time
  • Standard period of study: 4 semesters
  • Application deadline:
    • Winter semester: 1 September
    • Summer semester: 1 March

If you require a visa to study in Germany, please apply no later than 15 July for winter semester or 15 January for summer semester (ex. 15 July 2026 for winter semester 2026/2027). We make our best effort to process your application quickly after these deadlines. However, we cannot guarantee that your application will be processed in time for your visa application, as requirements vary depending on country and individual circumstances. Applicants are solely responsible for their visa applications, including ensuring there is adequate time for visa processing and for making travel arrangements. If your visa is not granted in time for the semester you planned on beginning your studies, you will need to complete a new application, as applications cannot be transferred between semesters. Please refer to your already accepted application in your new application.

General information on applications

If you are interested in the Master's programme in Systems Engineering, you can apply online directly to the Department of Systems Engineering.

For admission to the programme, your most recent university degree must be equivalent to a relevant Bachelor's degree from Saarland University and you must demonstrate particular academic aptitude. The department will assess these criteria based on the information you provide in your online application. For further details, please refer to the current examination regulations for the Master's programme.

Depending on your chosen specialization (see 'Programme structure'), modules are usually conducted in German or English. You must therefore demonstrate sufficient language proficiency (as a rule at least level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) in the language of your specialization.

Application documents and application form

We would like to find out more about you—in particular, why you chose our Master's programme in Systems Engineering.

    • In all other cases, we require formal proof of language proficiency at CEFR level B2 or above.
    • If you do not yet have such proof, you may be granted provisional admission on condition that you demonstrate the required language proficiency within one semester, e.g. by completing a language course at level B2.

Specializations

Industrial work placement / internship

By undertaking an industrial work placement / internship with a company, you'll have an opportunity to familiarize yourself with working practices in your chosen field.

In addition to promoting your understanding and motivation for your studies, it will also facilitate your transition into working life.

Working together with the host company's employees allows you to gain insights into the technical, economic and, in particular, social aspects of the world of work.

Completion of the practical phase is evidenced by a report book which you keep and a certificate from the training company.

Duration and timing:
The industrial work placement / internship lasts 8 weeks and should ideally be completed in the third semester before commencing your Master's thesis.
