Studying as a non-exchange student ('free mover')
A 'free mover' is a student who organizes their study abroad period independently of Saarland University’s cooperation or exchange agreements. Non-exchange students are responsible for arranging a place at their chosen host university and for organizing funding. Free movers can, however, receive support from the GoOut! Service Center team. To help you prepare for your stay abroad, we recommend taking the following steps:
- Start by gathering information. For example, the DAAD website offers information on countries and languages, scholarship options, reports, tips and guidance.
- Get in touch early on with Saarland University’s International Office. If you are considering applying for a scholarship to fund your stay abroad, we strongly recommend that you contact us at least 18 months before your planned departure date.
- Explore your funding options. We would be pleased to help.
- Apply in good time for a passport and, if required, the relevant visa.
- Apply for admission to a short-term study programme at the university of your choice. The relevant application documents are available from the website of your host university.
- Make a list of the courses you plan to take during your time abroad and check with your departmental coordinator or the examination office at Saarland University whether they will be approved for credit transfer.
- Look for somewhere to live. Most host universities will help incoming students find suitable accommodation.
- If necessary, take out appropriate health insurance for the duration of your stay.
- Organize your travel itinerary.
