Studying abroad outside of Europe

Studying outside of Europe opens doors for Saarland University students to gain intercultural experience, new academic perspectives and to improve their language skills. Saarland University's broad array of partner universities around the world and numerous funding options for stays abroad give students the chance to develop both personally and academically.

Planning a stay abroad takes time, so interested students should begin preparing between 12 and 18 months ahead of their planned departure date.

Your preparations should include finding out about options for financing your stay abroad and considering scholarships and other funding opportunities.

Studying abroad outside of Europe

What are the benefits?
  • Students from all fields of study are welcome to participate in the exchange programmes (certain limitations apply for medical students).
  • Students who receive a place at a partner university abroad do not pay the partner university's tuition fees.
  • Students receive comprehensive support throughout the application process, including advice on available study programmes, information on required documents, checking your application, help communicating with partner universities, submitting your nomination to the host university, as well as continued support while you are abroad.
  • Academic credit earned abroad can usually be transferred to your degree programme at Saarland University.
Requirements
  • Students who have been enrolled full-time at Saarland University for at least two semesters when the application periods close are eligible to apply.
  • Please take note of the requirements set out by our partner universities such as language proficiency, academic qualifications or proof of secured funding for the duration of your stay.
Funding rates

A successful nomination does not guarantee funding. To learn more about the largest funding providers, consult our web page on funding your stay abroad.

What else do I need to know?
  • It is not possible to earn a degree from your host university as a part of your exchange programme. It is, however, possible to extend your stay at your own expense and earn a degree outside of the exchange programme, provided that you are accepted as a regular student by your host university.
  • The number of places is limited and varies from year to year. Saarland University's International Office is responsible for selecting candidates, while the admissions process is managed by the host university. Your host university will help you find accommodation.
  • Please note that application deadlines as well as the academic calendar at our partner universities can vary. In many countries, the academic calendar differs to that in Germany. Our downloads page contains links to important information, document templates and translation aids that you may need for your application.
Preparing to go abroad
