What is the ISIC international student identity card?

The ISIC card is issued by the non-profit organization ‘ISIC Association’. The ISIC Association’s mission is ‘Making student life better’, and new student deals, discounts and services are being added all the time. The student discounts offered focus on mobility, travel and culture and aim to make your stay abroad a unique and enriching experience. But the ISIC card also offers a host of great money-saving deals to students in Germany as well.

Originally created by students for students back in 1953, the ISIC card has continued to grow and has enjoyed UNESCO support since 1968. The goal, then as now, was to promote international student mobility and to facilitate intercultural exchange. The ISIC card enables students to discover new countries, new languages and new cultures without coming home broke.

The European Student Card Initiative (ESCI)

The European Student Card (ESC) is part of the European Student Card Initiative (ESCI), which was launched by the European Commission in 2017. The aim is to facilitate student mobility within Europe by streamlining the electronic exchange and verification of student data. The three building blocks of ESCI are the European Student Card (ECS), the Erasmus+ app, and the ‘Erasmus without paper’ digitalization solution. The ESC card acts as a digital identifier for students in Europe and links student cards from all higher education institutions into a single system, simplifying access to both on-campus and off-campus services. The ISIC Association supports the implementation of the European Student Card Initiative.

At Saarland University, ESCI has been implemented as part of the Transform4Europe university alliance with financial support from the European Union.
