Studying in Eastern Europe
General information
- You will receive a grant to cover travel and living expenses.
- You will be accommodated in a student hall of residence at the host university.
- You’ll receive plenty of support from your host university—both before and during your stay.
- You do not have to pay tuition fees at the host university.
- Academic credits earned at the host university can be transferred to your study programme at Saarland University.
The Eastern Partnerships programme can provide funding for students who would like to:
- study for one semester (during which you would be expected to earn 20–30 ECTS credits)
- take a free preparatory language course (Bulgarian, Polish, Czech)
- take part in academic field trips and excursions
- join specialized courses or summer schools
- undertake a short research stay associated with their final thesis project.
Doctoral students are also eligible for funding through the Eastern Partnerships programme. In this case, the maximum funding period is three months.

To be eligible for support from the Eastern Partnerships programme, you will need to meet the following requirements:
- You are enrolled as a degree-seeking student at Saarland University.
- You are sufficiently proficient in the official language or the language of instruction at your host university.
The programme is open to all students, irrespective of
- their nationality
- the academic discipline they are studying.
Undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students can receive funding for several stays within the Eastern Partnerships programme provided that the total duration does not exceed the maximum allowed funding period. The maximum permissible funding period for undergraduate and postgraduate students is one semester, for doctoral students three months.
Monthly grants
As a rule, you will receive a monthly grant of €200 in all Eastern Partnership countries.
Travel grant
Travel expenses will be reimbursed based on the distance travelled, provided that you submit proof of travel (tickets, receipts, etc.). The maximum amounts that can be reimbursed are:
- Bulgaria: €400
- Georgia: €675
- Czech Republic: €300
- Poland: €300
Vor Ihrem Auslandsaufenthalt informieren Sie sich bei Ihrem Prüfungssekretariat oder den Lehrstühlen Ihrer Fachrichtung darüber, welche Leistungen für Ihre Studium anerkannt werden können.Diese werden im sogenannten Learning Agreement (Studienvertrag) festgehalten. Das Learning Agreement wird von Ihnen, Ihrer Fachkoordination an der Universität des Saarlandes und der Fachkoordination der Gastuniversität unterzeichnet.
Für Leistungen, die nicht direkt im Rahmen Ihres Studienplans anerkannt werden, können Sie sich bei Ihrem Prüfungsamt ein Diploma Supplement ausstellen lassen. Dies dokumentiert, dass Sie über Ihren Studienplan hinaus Leistungen erbracht haben und kann beispielsweise bei Bewerbungen als Nachweis für Zusatzqualifikationen beigelegt werden.
How to apply
Die "Ostpartnerschaften"
Im Rahmen der vom DAAD finanzierten „Ostpartnerschaften“ können Sie Ihren Auslandsaufenthalt an einer unserer Partnerhochschulen in Bulgarien, Georgien, Polen und Tschechien absolvieren. Es stehen je zwei Plätze pro Jahr zur Verfügung. Reise- und Aufenthaltskosten werden übernommen. Als Stipendiat erhalten Sie an der Partnerhochschule ein Wohnheimzimmer und werden vor Ort betreut.
Other opportunities to study in Eastern Europe
The DAAD programme 'Go East' provides scholarships to fund study visits of several months in the Eastern European partner countries. Funding covers a travel allowance, a language course allowance and a monthly stipend for living expenses. Applications must be submitted to DAAD.
