PROMOS
Saarland University awards financial support for stays abroad of up to six months through PROMOS, a programme funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) that aims to increase the number of students at German higher education institutions who spend a period abroad during their studies. Funding is available for study abroad, internships abroad, short-term courses aligned to the student's degree programme (up to 6 weeks), language courses, study trips and competition-related travel.

The following section outlines the general requirements for the PROMOS programme. Please also take note of the requirements for the type of stay you are planning (study abroad, internship, language course, etc.)
- You must be enrolled at Saarland University as a full-time degree-seeking student or be admitted to a Master's degree programme (for stays abroad between Bachelor's and Master's programmes)
- Strong academic performance (students must have completed at least two semesters of their Bachelor's degree, meaning their semester abroad can take place in the third semester or later. Master's students can apply from the first semester on.)
- You must fulfil the specific requirements for your planned type of stay abroad (length of stay, language proficiency, application materials)
- Study periods abroad and internships abroad are only available to Bachelor's and Master's students, not doctoral students. Doctoral students can participate in all other types of stays abroad through the PROMOS programme.
- Study abroad: Stay abroad between 3 and 6 months at a higher education institution in a country not associated with the Erasmus+ programme for a study abroad semester or to complete a final thesis. It is possible to fund a stay in an Erasmus+ country through the PROMOS programme if your department does not have a cooperation agreement with your host institution.
- Internships: Full-time internships (at least 30 hours per week) organized by the student in countries not associated with the Erasmus+ programme for at least two months and up to six months
- Language course: Language course at an accredited higher education institution for at least three weeks and up to six weeks. Courses must comprise at least 25 hours per week and be relevant to your studies or doctoral research. Basic knowledge of the language (at least CEFR level A2) is required. Exceptions: Language courses in languages commonly taught in schools (English, French, Spanish, Italian) and courses at private institutions
- Courses relevant to your degree programme: Participation in courses up to six weeks long that are relevant to your degree programme and held at higher education institutions or academic organizations worldwide. Students nearing the end of their degree programme will receive priority.
- Study trips in countries outside the EU: Students (including doctoral students) as well as at most one teaching staff member. Stay of at least 7 days and no more than 12 days. At least 5 and no more than 15 participants. Study trips need to be subject relevant, impart knowledge on the country visited and include the opportunity to network with other students or researchers (for examples, see our FAQs)
- Competition-related travel in countries outside the EU: Students (including doctoral students) as well as at most one teaching staff member. Stay of at least 7 days and no more than 12 days. At least 5 and no more than 15 participants.
- Your host country is associated with the Erasmus+ programme (for exceptions see the 'Funding' section of the FAQs).
- The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has funding opportunities specifically for the type of stay you are planning.
- There is a travel warning from the German Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt). When choosing your destination, please take the travel advice and warnings from the Federal Foreign Office as well as the German Academic Exchange Service's safety advice into account.
Selection process
- There is no set number of scholarships that can be awarded. Scholarships are awarded within the scope of the funding allocated by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
- A selection committee examines written application materials and completes a proposal for the award of PROMOS partial scholarships according to the DAAD's selection criteria.
- The selection committee's proposal is then made available to academic departments to approve. If there are no objections from the academic departments before the deadline to comment, students are then informed of their application status.
Selection criteria (from most to least important)
- Period abroad at a partner university of Saarland University
- Academic achievement: academic progress, publications, etc.
- Letter of recommendation
- Academic purpose and relevance: personal motivation, reason for selecting host institution, clear connection with the applicant's study programme, long-term relevance
- Language proficiency
- Particular consideration of students from equal opportunities target groups (non-academic background, students with a chronic illness or with a certified degree of disability of at least 20%, students going abroad with their child/children or students with care commitments)
- Intercultural competence and community engagement, either within the university (ex.participating in your departmental student organization or intercultural activities) or outside of the university (ex. clubs, volunteer work)
- Funding rates are determined by the German Academic Exchange Service.
- PROMOS is a partial scholarship and awards might only cover certain costs (such as travel or accommodation expenses) and/or a period of your stay abroad. Funding also depends on your type of stay abroad:
- Study period abroad and internships: travel allowance based on your host country and/or a monthly partial scholarship
- Language courses and courses related to your degree programme: Top-up funding for travel depending on host country and 45 euros per person per day for accommodation costs, regardless of your host country
- For study trips and competition-related travel: 45 euros per person per day for accommodation costs, regardless of your host country
- There is no legal entitlement to funding. We cannot guarantee that you will receive funding. You should therefore plan your stay so that it will also be possible without PROMOS funding.
- PROMOS can be combined with other funding sources such as BAföG student loans or scholarships. You can find more information on combining funding sources in our FAQ section under 'Funding'.
- PROMOS scholarships do not include insurance cover. Please obtain health, accident and personal liability insurance cover that is valid abroad (ex. the combined insurance plan from the German Academic Exchange Service)
