Border Renaissance: Recent Developments in Territorial, Cultural, and Linguistic Border Studies

Conference of the Interreg VA-Project "European Center for Competence and Knowledge in Border Studies" within the UniGR-Center for Border Studies (UniGR-CBS)

4-5th February 2022, Saarland University, on-line and on-site

A renaissance of borders has been observed for the last two decades. This development suggests that we have entered an age of borders both on a global scale and in the European border regions. Against this background, border studies in particular is called upon to provide appropriate knowledge regarding orientation and action.

Since its beginnings, the UniGR-CBS has asserted itself as a generator of knowledge in multidisciplinary Border research, developing a profile which ranges from geography and spatial planning to linguistics, literature and cultural studies.

The aim of the conference is, on the one hand, to elaborate the renaissance of the border in various thematic fields and to identify its challenges for future research. For this purpose, recent developments in territorial, cultural and linguistic border research will be applied. On the other hand, the research strands of spatial and cultural border research conducted in the UniGR-CBS will be brought together. This will consolidate the cooperation within the UniGR-CBS and strengthen the dialogue with international border researchers.
